How to pray in Islam

First khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ، وَنَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شُرُورِ أَنْفُسِنَا وَمِنْ سَيِّئَاتِ أَعْمَالِنَا، مَنْ يَهْدِهِ اللَّهُ فَلَا مُضِلَّ لَهُ، وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ﴾. فَالْجُمُعَةُ فَرِيضَةٌ تَقُومُ مَقَامَ الظُّهْرِ: خُطْبَتَانِ، ثُمَّ رَكْعَتَانِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ. يَجْلِسُ الْإِمَامُ بَيْنَ الْخُطْبَتَيْنِ جَلْسَةً خَفِيفَةً ثُمَّ يَقُومُ. الْبَيْعُ يَنْتَظِرُ، وَرَبُّكُمْ لَا يَنْتَظِرُ. فَاغْتَسِلُوا، وَالْبَسُوا نَظِيفًا، وَبَكِّرُوا إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ حَيْثُ إِمَامٌ وَخُطْبَةٌ. وَلَا تُقِيمُوا الْجُمُعَةَ فِي حَانُوتٍ وَلَا فِي حَدِيقَةٍ. وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «إِذَا قُلْتَ لِصَاحِبِكَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَنْصِتْ وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ فَقَدْ لَغَوْتَ». فَإِذَا صَعِدَ الْإِمَامُ الْمِنْبَرَ فَاجْلِسُوا وَاسْكُتُوا. لَا هَاتِفَ، وَلَا حَدِيثَ. وَمَنِ اغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْجُمُعَةَ فَصَلَّى مَا قُدِّرَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أَنْصَتَ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ الْإِمَامُ مِنْ خُطْبَتِهِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى مَعَهُ، غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجُمُعَةِ الْأُخْرَى. وَمَنْ فَاتَتْهُ الْجُمُعَةُ فَلْيُصَلِّ الظُّهْرَ أَرْبَعًا. أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

Translation

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and from our bad deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray; whomever He leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. May Allah send peace and blessings upon him, his family and his companions. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah as He should be minded, and do not die except as Muslims. Servants of Allah: Allah says, “When the call is made for prayer on Friday, go to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade.” Jumuʿah is an obligation that takes the place of Dhuhr: two khuṭbahs, then two rakʿahs in congregation. The imam sits briefly between the two khuṭbahs, then stands. Trade can wait. Your Lord does not wait. Take a bath, wear what is clean, and come early to the masjid where there is an imam and a khuṭbah. Do not start the Friday prayer in a shop or a park. The Prophet ﷺ said: if you say to your companion on Friday “be quiet” while the imam is delivering the khuṭbah, you have spoken. When the imam climbs the minbar, sit and be silent. No phone, and no talk. Whoever bathes, comes to Jumuʿah, prays what is written for him, stays silent until the imam finishes, then prays with him — what is between that Friday and the next is forgiven. Whoever misses Jumuʿah entirely should pray four rakʿahs of Dhuhr. I say this and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.

Second khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ. إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ، يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا، وَصَلُّوا عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ. اللَّهُمَّ اجْمَعْ قُلُوبَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِي هَذِهِ الْبِلَادِ، وَتَقَبَّلْ جُمُعَتَنَا، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِوَالِدِينَا. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

Translation

All praise is for Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah. Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and forbids indecency, wrong and transgression. He admonishes you so that you may remember. Servants of Allah: remember Allah much, and send blessings upon His Prophet ﷺ. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, gather the hearts of the Muslims in this land, accept our Jumuʿah, and forgive us and our parents. Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the next, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

First khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ، وَنَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شُرُورِ أَنْفُسِنَا. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا﴾. وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: «صَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي». فَتَوَضَّؤُوا، وَاسْتَقْبِلُوا الْقِبْلَةَ، وَاسْجُدُوا سَجْدَتَيْنِ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ، وَصَلُّوا الْوِتْرَ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ. وَنَهَى ﷺ أَنْ يَنْقُرَ الرَّجُلُ فِي سُجُودِهِ نَقْرَ الْغُرَابِ. فَاسْكُنُوا فِي الرُّكُوعِ، وَفِي الْجَلْسَةِ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ، وَفِي الْقِيَامِ. وَالْهَاتِفُ الصَّامِتُ فِي الْجَيْبِ مِنْ هَذَا السُّكُونِ. وَمَنْ نَامَ عَنْ صَلَاةٍ أَوْ نَسِيَهَا فَلْيُصَلِّهَا إِذَا ذَكَرَهَا، فَذَلِكَ وَقْتُهَا. أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

Translation

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah as He should be minded, and do not die except as Muslims. Servants of Allah: He said, “Prayer is a timed obligation upon the believers.” The Prophet ﷺ said: pray as you have seen me pray. So make wuḍūʾ, face the qibla, make two sujūd in every rakʿah, and pray witr after ʿIshāʾ. He ﷺ forbade pecking in sujūd like a crow. Be still in rukūʿ, in the sit between the two sujūd, and in the stand. A silent phone in the pocket is part of that stillness. Whoever slept through a prayer or forgot it should pray it when he remembers — that is its time. I say this and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.

Second khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ. إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: إِذَا سَلَّمْتُمْ فَاجْلِسُوا هُنَيْهَةً: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، كَمَا فِي صَحِيحِ مُسْلِمٍ. ثُمَّ قُومُوا لِلسُّنَّةِ. وَالْأَذَانُ التَّالِي فِي هَذِهِ الْمَدِينَةِ لَيْسَ بَعِيدًا. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ. اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنَّا عَلَىٰ ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ، وَثَبِّتْنَا عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

Translation

All praise is for Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah. Allah commands justice and excellence. Servants of Allah: when you have made salām, sit a moment. Subḥānallāh thirty-three, al-ḥamdulillāh thirty-three, Allāhu akbar thirty-three, as in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Then stand for the sunnah. The next adhān in this city is not far. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad. O Allah, help us to remember You, thank You, and worship You well, and keep us firm on salah. Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the next, and protect us from the Fire.

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ الْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلًا كَرِيمًا﴾. كَثِيرٌ مِنَّا يَعْمَلُ بَعِيدًا عَنِ الْبَيْتِ الَّذِي نَشَأَ فِيهِ. فَاتِّصَالٌ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ، وَحَوَالَةٌ تَصِلُ فِي وَقْتِهَا، وَأُمٌّ تُمْشَى بِهَا إِلَى حَيْثُ تَحْتَاجُ — هَذَا مِنَ الْإِحْسَانِ. وَقَدَّمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْأُمَّ ثَلَاثًا قَبْلَ الْأَبِ. فَإِنْ مَاتَا فَالدُّعَاءُ لَهُمَا مَفْتُوحٌ، وَالصَّدَقَةُ عَنْهُمَا مَفْتُوحَةٌ. أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

Translation

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah as He should be minded, and do not die except as Muslims. Servants of Allah: your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be excellent to parents. If one of them, or both, reach old age with you, do not say uff to them, and do not snap at them — say a noble word. Many of us work far from the house we grew up in. A call after Maghrib, a remittance that arrives on time, walking your mother where she needs to go — that is iḥsān. The Prophet ﷺ put the mother three times before the father. If they have died, duʿāʾ for them is still open, and ṣadaqah on their behalf is still open. I say this and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.

Second khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ. إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ. وَقُلْ: ﴿رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا﴾. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ. اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْ وَالِدِينَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانَا صِغَارًا، وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَلَنَا. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

Translation

All praise is for Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah. Allah commands justice and excellence. And say: “My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.” O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad. O Allah, have mercy on our parents as they raised us when we were small, and forgive them and us. Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the next, and protect us from the Fire.

First khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ ۝ الَّذِينَ إِذَا اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ ۝ وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ﴾. كَشْفُ الرَّاتِبِ، وَالتَّوْصِيلُ، وَالْمَطْبَخُ الْحَلَالُ الصَّادِقُ فِيمَا فِي الْقِدْرِ: هَذَا مِيزَانُ هَذِهِ الْمَدِينَةِ. وَقَالَ: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ﴾. وَالتَّاجِرُ الصَّدُوقُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ. وَاسْمٌ مُسْلِمٌ عَلَى دُكَّانٍ لَا يَجْعَلُ الطَّعَامَ حَلَالًا — إِنَّمَا الْمُكَوِّنُ وَالشَّهَادَةُ. فَلَا تَبِيعُوا كَذِبًا وَلَا تَشْتَرُوهُ. أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

Translation

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah as He should be minded, and do not die except as Muslims. Servants of Allah: woe to those who give short measure — who, when they take from people, demand it in full, and when they measure or weigh for them, give less. A wage slip, a delivery, a halal kitchen that is honest about what is in the pot: that is the scale in this city. And He said: Allah commands justice and excellence. The honest merchant is with the prophets, the truthful and the martyrs. A Muslim name on a shop does not make the food ḥalāl — the ingredient and the certificate do. Do not sell a lie, and do not buy one. I say this and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.

Second khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ. إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ. وَالسُّورَةُ الَّتِي أَمَرَتْ بِالْجُمُعَةِ قَالَتْ: ذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ. فَالدُّكَّانُ يَنْتَظِرُ أَرْبَعِينَ دَقِيقَةً. وَرَبُّ الدُّكَّانِ لَا يَنْتَظِرُ. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ. اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنَا الْحَلَالَ الطَّيِّبَ، وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي أَعْمَالِنَا، وَجَنِّبْنَا الْغِشَّ. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

Translation

All praise is for Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah. Allah commands justice and excellence. The same sūrah that commands Friday also says: leave trade. The stall can wait forty minutes. The Lord of the stall does not wait. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad. O Allah, provide us with what is ḥalāl and good, bless our work, and keep us from cheating. Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the next, and protect us from the Fire.

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا﴾. وَقَالَ: ﴿إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ﴾. فِي هُونْغ كُونْغَ تَخْتَلِطُ الصَّفُّ: بَاكِسْتَانِيٌّ وَإِنْدُونِيسِيٌّ وَصِينِيٌّ وَإِفْرِيقِيٌّ وَحَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِالْإِسْلَامِ. إِمَامُ الْقَاعَةِ إِمَامُ الْقَاعَةِ. فَلَا تُقِيمُوا جَمَاعَةً ثَانِيَةً فِي السَّاحَةِ، وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا الْمَدْرَسَةَ حِزْبًا. وَحَبْلُ اللَّهِ كِتَابُهُ وَمَا صَحَّ عَنْ نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ. فَهَذَا يَكْفِي. صَلُّوا كَمَا صَحَّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ. وَفِي النَّازِلَةِ سَلُوا الْإِمَامَ الَّذِي أَمَامَكُمْ — لَا مَقْطَعًا، وَلَا مَجْمُوعَةً فِي الْهَاتِفِ. أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah as He should be minded, and do not die except as Muslims. Servants of Allah: hold fast to the rope of Allah, all of you, and do not split. The believers are brothers. In Hong Kong the row already mixes Pakistani, Indonesian, Chinese, African and new Muslims. The imam of the hall is the imam of the hall. Do not make a second jamāʿah in the courtyard, and do not turn a madrasah into a party. The rope of Allah is His Book and what is ṣaḥīḥ from His Prophet ﷺ. That is enough. Pray as it is soundly reported from the Prophet ﷺ. For a hard case, ask the imam in front of you — not a clip, not a group chat. I say this and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.

Second khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ. إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ. اللَّهُمَّ اجْمَعْ قُلُوبَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِي هُونْغ كُونْغَ وَشِنْزِنَ وَغُوَانْغْجُو، وَاجْعَلْ مَسَاجِدَنَا دُورَ صَلَاةٍ لَا دُورَ جِدَالٍ، وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

Translation

All praise is for Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah. Allah commands justice and excellence. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad. O Allah, gather the hearts of the Muslims of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Make our halls places of salah, not of argument, and let us die as Muslims. Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the next, and protect us from the Fire.

First khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: الصَّحَابِيُّ مَنْ لَقِيَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مُؤْمِنًا وَمَاتَ عَلَى الْإِيمَانِ. وَالصَّحَابِيَّةُ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْهُمْ. قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَانٍ رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ﴾. مِنَ الرِّجَالِ: أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرُ، وَعُثْمَانُ، وَعَلِيٌّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ. خُلَفَاءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَذَا التَّرْتِيبِ. وَمِنَ النِّسَاءِ: خَدِيجَةُ أَوَّلُ مَنْ آمَنَ، وَعَائِشَةُ الَّتِي رَوَتْ عِلْمًا كَثِيرًا، وَفَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، وَسُمَيَّةُ أَوَّلُ مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ، وَنُسَيْبَةُ الَّتِي دَافَعَتْ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ. رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُنَّ. لَا نَسُبُّهُمْ، وَلَا نَعْبُدُهُمْ. مَقَامُهُمْ دُونَ مَقَامِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ. نَقُولُ: رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ، وَنَقْتَدِي بِصِدْقِهِمْ وَصَلَاتِهِمْ. أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

Translation

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask His forgiveness. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah as He should be minded, and do not die except as Muslims. Servants of Allah: a ṣaḥābī is someone who met the Prophet ﷺ as a believer and died upon faith. A ṣaḥābiyyah is a woman among them. Allah says: the first forerunners among the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them in goodness — Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. Among the men: Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with them. They were the khalīfahs after the Messenger of Allah, in that order. Among the women: Khadījah, the first to believe; ʿĀʾishah, who passed on a great deal of knowledge; Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ; Sumayyah, the first person killed for Islam; and Nusaybah, who defended him on the day of Uḥud. May Allah be pleased with them. We do not curse them, and we do not worship them. Their rank is below the rank of the Prophet ﷺ. We say “may Allah be pleased with them,” and we follow their honesty and their salah. I say this and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ نَحْمَدُهُ وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ. عِبَادَ اللَّهِ: فِي خُطْبَةِ الْجُمُعَةِ يَذْكُرُ الْإِمَامُ أَرْبَعَةً. أَوَّلًا: اللَّهَ، حَمْدًا وَشَهَادَةَ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ. ثَانِيًا: مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ، شَهَادَةً أَنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، وَصَلَاةً عَلَيْهِ، وَقَدْ قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ﴾. ثَالِثًا: مَوْعِظَةً، آيَةً أَوْ تَذْكِيرًا، وَمَوْضُوعُهَا يَتَغَيَّرُ كُلَّ جُمُعَةٍ. رَابِعًا: الْمُسْلِمِينَ، دُعَاءً لَهُمْ فِي الْخُطْبَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ. وَكَثِيرٌ مِنَ الْأَئِمَّةِ يَقُولُونَ: وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ، وَبَعْضُهُمْ يُسَمِّي أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيًّا. هَذَا حَسَنٌ فِي مَسَاجِدِنَا، وَلَيْسَ رُكْنًا زَائِدًا. الْخُطْبَةُ خُطْبَةٌ إِذَا حَمِدَ الْإِمَامُ اللَّهَ، وَشَهِدَ الشَّهَادَتَيْنِ، وَصَلَّى عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، وَوَعَظَ، وَدَعَا لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ. لَا نَزِيدُ أَسْمَاءً لَمْ يَقُلْهَا الْإِمَامُ، وَلَا نُجَادِلُ فِي الصَّفِّ. أَقُولُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

Translation

Servants of Allah: in the Friday khuṭbah the imam mentions four things. First, Allah: praise, and the witness that none is worshipped but Allah. Second, Muhammad ﷺ: the witness that he is the Messenger of Allah, and the prayer of blessings upon him. Allah says: Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. Third, a reminder: a verse or an admonition. Its topic changes every Friday. Fourth, the Muslims: a dua for them in the second khuṭbah. Many imams also say “and upon his family and his companions,” and some name Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī. That is good in our masjids. It is not an extra pillar. The khuṭbah is a khuṭbah when the imam has praised Allah, borne the two witnesses, sent blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, given a reminder, and made dua for the Muslims. We do not add names the imam did not say, and we do not argue in the row. I say this and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you.

Second khuṭbah — Arabic, then translation
